Learn to Dance

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

My mother made me take ballroom dancing lessons when I was tiny, and I detested it. She would go to rock shows with me, if I’d do something for her. It took me a while to heat up to the idea.

My girlfriend has traditionally been much more classy than I am and she used to be a natural at swing dance lessons. She took to it like a fish takes to water, or like a flying fish takes air. I dropped nearly 3 times during the first of the swing dance lessons. I never would have stuck with it except that I did owe her. I never know what it felt like to really be ready to dance. All of a sudden I had this sense of joy in each movement.

If the swing dance lessons had started slowly, they certainly had finished with a bang. If you need to learn how to dance, but haven’t had any success with it, my recommendation is to go out of need to a buddy.

This can sound daft, but I never would have succeeded in the swing dance lessons unless I had to. It is simple to throw in the towel on something similar to that. Many of us are so clutzy that it sort of feels like we’ll never be ready to dance. The actuality is that if we keep it up, we are able to master swing dance lessons.
